On August 19, 2019, UC San Diego became the first University of California campus to bring its Student Health Services (SHS) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) onto the same electronic medical record (EMR) system used by its own UC San Diego Health hospitals and clinics. Being on the same EMR system makes it easier for students to access the resources of the region’s only academic medical center, ensures greater continuity of care for UCSD students, and safeguards student health records with the same enhanced privacy and security protections the health system has in place for all of its patients. Since go-live, over 95,000 patient records have been received from health systems across the nation- reducing duplicate medical record creation, and appointment redundancies and more importantly importing critical historic patient data for continuity of care. Furthermore, implementing Epic at SHSCAPS provided the foundation for the success of the UCSD Return to Learn Program in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling a seamless telehealth transition and weekly testing of more than 5000 students since May 2020.
